As of April 23 midnight, no one has been allowed to enter the Fukushima evacuation zone, a 20-km (12 miles) area from the damaged nuclear power plant where pets and livestock have been left behind. For those that violate this new regulation, a penalty of up to 100,000 YEN (approx. US$1,300) will be posed.
Author’s note: Many NPOs and individuals are pressing the local government (Fukushima prefecture) to officially start the rescue of the pets within the area, which has led the officials to a decision of letting evacuees return for up to 5 hours beginning sometime next week. My apologies for the delay to put this news up.
